The families of a 16 year old boy and a 44 year old man have been informed after their bodies were found in a burnt out car following a crash on the A830 near Fort William. Emergency services were called to the scene at Corpach at around 3am on Saturday after reports of a vehicle on fire. The bodies were discovered within the wreckage. Formal identification has yet to take place.
Police believe the crash, involving a blue Vauxhall Astra, happened at approximately 1.45am, more than an hour before emergency services were alerted. The road was closed for a crash investigation and did not fully reopen until around 7pm on Sunday.
Sergeant Calum MacAulay said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the people who died in this crash. It’s vital we establish exactly what happened and I’m appealing for anyone with information to come forward. If you were on the A830 in the early hours of Saturday morning and saw anything which may help, please come forward.”
He also urged drivers with dashcam footage of the area around the time to review it for anything significant. Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 0389 of February 21.
The A830 between Fort William and Mallaig is one of the most remote stretches of road in the Highlands. At that hour on a winter morning, there may have been nobody else on the road. The gap between the estimated time of the crash and when it was reported tells you everything about the isolation of the location. Two families are now dealing with an unimaginable loss, and the investigation into what happened in those early hours of Saturday morning continues.
