Tonnes of food that would otherwise have gone to landfill have been saved and distributed to residents in North Glasgow for free over the past four years, according to Glasgow Times.

The initiative has worked to intercept surplus food from suppliers and retailers before it reaches waste streams, redirecting it instead to people in the community who can use it.

Tackling Waste and Food Poverty

The programme addresses two problems simultaneously: reducing the environmental impact of food waste going to landfill, and helping to alleviate food poverty in parts of Glasgow where many residents struggle with the cost of living.

Scotland generates significant quantities of food waste each year, and community redistribution schemes like this one have become an increasingly important part of efforts to reduce that figure while supporting vulnerable households.
