Holyrood Election 2026: SNP Lead Polling as May Vote Approaches

Listen to this article

As Scotland looks ahead to the Scottish Parliament election on 7 May 2026, the latest polling shows the Scottish National Party maintaining its position as the frontrunner, though facing a path to majority that remains uncertain.

The Electoral Landscape

Recent YouGov polling from January 2026 indicates the SNP is leading with Reform UK in second place, whilst Labour’s momentum from the 2024 UK general election appears to have reversed. The Conservatives continue their decline in Scottish support, a trend that has been consistent over recent years.

Key Campaign Issues

According to Professor John Curtice, the main campaign issues dominating voter concerns include the economy, cost of living, health and social care services, and immigration. Whilst independence may not be at the top of voters’ immediate agendas, the question continues to loom over Scottish politics.

Majority Question

The SNP has stated that a majority of seats would constitute a mandate for pursuing a second independence referendum. However, current polling suggests they are on course to fall short of the 65 seats needed for an outright majority at Holyrood.
