Aberdeen’s annual Jazz Festival opens this week, bringing 10 days of performances, workshops, and jam sessions to venues across the Granite City from 12 to 22 March.

The festival has established itself as a highlight of Scotland’s music calendar, attracting internationally renowned musicians alongside homegrown Scottish talent. I spoke to several of the organisers at yesterday’s programme launch, and the enthusiasm for this year’s lineup is palpable.

Diverse Programming

This year’s festival features a carefully curated mix of traditional jazz, contemporary fusion, and experimental sounds. Venues ranging from intimate bars to concert halls will host performances, with something scheduled for virtually every night of the festival.

International acts feature prominently, with musicians travelling from across Europe and North America to perform. However, the festival also places strong emphasis on Scottish jazz musicians, many of whom have built substantial followings both at home and abroad.

Educational Component

Beyond the headline performances, the Aberdeen Jazz Festival includes an extensive programme of workshops and masterclasses. These sessions, led by professional musicians, cover everything from instrumental technique to composition and improvisation.

Young musicians are particularly encouraged to participate, with several events specifically designed for school-age students. Local music teachers have praised the festival’s educational outreach, noting that exposure to professional jazz musicians can be transformative for aspiring players.

Community Engagement

Free events remain a core part of the festival philosophy, with open-air performances scheduled in Aberdeen city centre. These accessible events help bring jazz to audiences who might not otherwise attend ticketed concerts, contributing to the genre’s growing popularity in the northeast.

The festival also partners with local businesses, many of which host live music during the 10-day period. This creates a city-wide celebration of jazz that extends well beyond the official venues, generating a distinctive atmosphere across Aberdeen.

Festival passes offering access to multiple events are available alongside individual tickets, with early booking discounts still available for the opening weekend. The full schedule includes over 50 separate performances across the 10 days.
