Beatson Cancer Charity is set to host one of Glasgow’s largest indoor yoga events, “Yellow Yogis,” at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) on September 13. The initiative aims to unite thousands of participants to raise a quarter of a million pounds for the charity’s vital Wellbeing Centre.

The unique fundraising session will be led by Finlay Wilson, internationally recognised as The Kilted Yogi, known for his accessible approach to yoga instruction. Television and radio presenter Jenny Powell will host the event, adding to the day’s atmosphere.

Participants of all abilities are welcome to attend the session, which promises to blend expert guidance with humour. For an entry fee of £35, attendees will receive a bespoke Yellow Yogi mat, access to the hour-long class, and details of additional activities planned for the day.

The primary goal of “Yellow Yogis” is to generate £250,000. These funds are earmarked directly for the Beatson Cancer Charity’s Wellbeing Centre, a crucial facility within The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. This centre offers emotional and practical support to individuals affected by cancer across Scotland, providing a calm environment away from clinical areas. It features comfortable lounges, various activities, and support services designed to enhance patient wellbeing during their treatment journey.

Mike Smith, a Business Ambassador for Beatson Cancer Charity and the founder of the Yellow Yogis concept, shared the origins of the initiative. He explained that the idea took root approximately 18 months ago with a clear objective.

“The idea came to me about 18 months ago. I wanted to create something that could make a genuinely big difference, and the vision was simple: bring people together for one of the largest indoor yoga sessions in the UK,” Mr Smith stated. He added, “Once we began sharing the idea, everything came together. Of course, I have to say thanks for the incredible support of all our sponsors and the team at Beaston too.”

Finlay Wilson, a senior Yoga Alliance teacher and author, has garnered an international following by making yoga accessible to a broad audience, including those new to the practice. His teaching philosophy focuses on breaking down perceived barriers to participation.

Mr Wilson elaborated on his mission, saying: “My mission is to break down barriers to starting or attending Yoga sessions. Whether it is by offering variations for all abilities, supporting different financial realities, or simply by cracking a joke when the going gets tough, I aim to create a space where everyone will get something out of the class and move in a way they haven’t moved before.”

Jenny Powell, who will host the event, rose to prominence through programmes such as No Limits and has since presented a range of popular television shows, including Wheel of Fortune, UP2U, Gimme 5, Live Talk, Wordplay, and Daybreak. Her presence is expected to contribute to the event’s engaging atmosphere.

The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre provides specialist care to patients from across the west of Scotland, making the charity’s fundraising efforts crucial for supporting those undergoing treatment. The “Yellow Yogis” event represents a significant community effort to enhance the support services available.

This event highlights the ongoing commitment of Scottish charities to provide essential services, often through large-scale community engagement. Such initiatives reflect a broader scene of community support and public interest across the nation. For instance, in Glasgow alone, significant numbers of young people benefit from social welfare initiatives, as highlighted in reports such as Over 52,000 Glasgow Children Benefit from Child Payment. While the focus here is on wellbeing, other sectors of Scottish life also see significant developments, including those impacting public services and transport, as recently covered in articles like Aberdeen University Staff Announce March Strike Dates and Rail Disruption Continues on Glasgow to Perth Line.

The organisers anticipate that the combination of a well-known instructor, an experienced host, and a compelling cause will attract a substantial turnout. The event is designed to be inclusive, ensuring that individuals at any stage of their yoga journey can participate and contribute to a worthy cause.
