Parts of Glasgow’s Trongate were closed on Friday night after reports of an unsafe building prompted a structural inspection. Glasgow City Council issued a traffic notice at around 8.10pm stating that the Trongate was shut to all traffic from Glassford Street to Candleriggs.

The council said surrounding streets including Candleriggs and Glassford Street would also require closure to carry out inspections. Drivers were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

The Trongate is one of Glasgow’s oldest and busiest streets, running through the heart of the Merchant City. Any closure on a Friday evening causes significant disruption, and the council’s notice was brief and unspecific about the nature of the structural concern.

At the time of the initial notice, no further details were given about which building was affected or the severity of the issue. The council said further updates would follow. If you are heading through the Merchant City area, the advice is straightforward: find another route until the inspection is complete and the street is reopened.
