Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced a pause on study visa routes for nationals from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan, alongside work visas for Afghan nationals.

The government said the move was aimed at preventing exploitation of the asylum system, claiming that some migrants had been using visa routes to enter the UK and then claim asylum on arrival.

Implications for Scotland

Scotland’s universities recruit significant numbers of international students, including from conflict affected countries. The suspension could affect students who have already received offers for the upcoming academic year, though the precise scope of the policy and any exemptions have not yet been clarified.

The decision has drawn criticism from refugee support organisations who argue it risks punishing individuals fleeing genuine persecution. Immigration policy is reserved to Westminster, but the impact will be felt across Scotland’s higher education sector and communities that have welcomed refugees from these countries.
