A Lanarkshire man has been sentenced to six months in prison after admitting to breaching court-imposed bail conditions and acting in a threatening or abusive manner towards police officers. Thomas Robertson, 25, from Salsburgh, received the custodial sentence at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.
The court heard that Mr Robertson made severe threats to officers following his arrest in Harthill. He was taken into custody from Peden Street on July 28, 2024. He directed aggressive language towards the arresting officers.
Mr Robertson was found heavily intoxicated and hiding among wheelie bins when police located him. Upon his arrest, he was heard to say:
“I’ll rip the face off you. I’ll take the face off every one of you.”
He also referred to the officers as
“rats”
and
“scumbags”
during the incident.
The charges to which Mr Robertson pleaded guilty related to incidents that occurred on July 27 and 28, 2024. These included breaching his bail conditions and engaging in threatening or abusive conduct.
His bail had been granted in relation to an earlier alleged life-threatening assault on his father, Thomas senior, which reportedly took place six weeks prior. In that incident, it was claimed Mr Robertson punched his then 57-year-old father, causing him to fall, then stamped on his head, leading to a loss of consciousness.
However, Mr Robertson’s not guilty plea to the serious assault charge was accepted by the court. The bail conditions stipulated that he was to remain out of Harthill and refrain from contacting his father.
The court was informed that Mr Robertson breached these conditions on the evening of July 27. His father was asleep at approximately 11pm when Mr Robertson arrived at his Peden Street home in Harthill. He began kicking the front door and banging on a window, repeatedly shouting his father’s name.
After a period, Mr Robertson left the premises but returned approximately two hours later. He again kicked the door and pleaded to be allowed inside the property. His father subsequently contacted the police.
Officers from Police Scotland responded to the call and located Mr Robertson. His subsequent arrest led to the threatening behaviour for which he has now been jailed.
Hamilton Sheriff Court, one of Scotland’s busiest sheriff courts, handles a wide range of criminal and civil cases. Breaching bail conditions is treated seriously by the Scottish justice system, as these conditions are put in place to protect individuals and ensure public safety while legal proceedings are ongoing.
The six-month prison sentence reflects the gravity of both the bail breach and the threatening conduct towards law enforcement officials. This outcome underscores the court’s stance on maintaining order and respecting judicial directives.
