Hearts midfielder Blair Spittal was unexpectedly called into the starting lineup for Saturday’s 1-0 Premiership victory over Falkirk, following an injury sustained by teammate Ageu during the warm-up. This last-minute inclusion saw Spittal play the full 90 minutes, contributing to a crucial win that keeps Hearts at the top of the league standings.

The 30-year-old midfielder has faced limited opportunities this season, having been an unused substitute in eight of the ten matches leading up to the weekend. His previous appearances included a four-minute stint in a January draw with Celtic and 68 minutes in a defeat at St Mirren earlier this month, where Hearts were reduced to ten men.

Spittal described the moment he learned of his unexpected start, stating:

“About seven minutes to three to be honest.”

He acknowledged the unfortunate nature of Ageu’s injury but highlighted the necessity for players to remain prepared.

“It’s one of those unfortunate things that happens in the warm up sometimes, when the boys get injured and you just need to make sure when you’re not starting you need to prepare as if something’s going to happen,”

Spittal added.

He recounted being told to prepare by assistant coach Paul Sheerin while warming up.

“I was still out warming up, I was just getting ready to hit a few shots and Paul Sheerin (assistant coach) came up to me and told me to make sure I was ready. Just at that moment, just make sure your head was switched on in the game,”

he explained. Despite acknowledging the game’s difficulty, he described the outcome as a positive three points.

Spittal’s performance against Falkirk, where he displayed technical quality and resilience in an injury-affected midfield, earned commendation. His manager, Derek McInnes, provided a straightforward instruction before the match. Spittal recalled McInnes’ message:

“Just come in and do what I do in training every day. Show a bit of composure.”

Reflecting on his season, which has seen him feature in 14 league matches, Spittal admitted the challenge of securing regular playing time.

“It’s been tough. I’m not going to lie, but it’s just important that you make sure you’re training well and wait for your opportunity,”

he said. He acknowledged the competitive nature of the squad, noting the strong performances of many teammates this year.

“The competition’s there, so like I said, you just need to make sure you’re ready for when the opportunity comes,”

Spittal affirmed.
