Been tracking this for the past fortnight and it's becoming a proper pattern. Betfair Exchange is now suspending all Scottish League Cup markets exactly 3 hours before kickoff instead of the usual 30 minutes we've had for years.

First noticed it during the Motherwell vs Dundee United tie on Tuesday - went to back the under 2.5 goals at 1.85 around 4:30pm for the 7:45pm kickoff and found all markets already locked. Same thing happened yesterday with the Celtic vs Falkirk match.

Called their support and got told it's a "temporary measure for Scottish domestic cup competitions" but no timeframe on when it'll revert. Anyone else finding this is killing their in-play strategy? The late team news and injury updates are usually what make these markets profitable.

Absolute nonsense from Betfair. The whole point of exchange betting is the flexibility to trade right up until kickoff. This 3-hour cutoff is just them protecting their own book because they can't handle the late money coming in on Scottish cup ties.

If you want proper exchange action on Scottish football, MyStake keeps their markets open until 15 minutes before kickoff and the liquidity is actually better than Betfair's joke offerings anyway.

This aligns with broader regulatory pressure on betting exchanges following the recent UKGC consultation on in-play betting protections. Betfair likely received guidance about "enhanced due diligence" for lower-tier Scottish fixtures where team news reliability is inconsistent.

I've documented similar timing changes across 23 different cup competitions since March. The pattern suggests exchanges are pre-emptively reducing exposure windows for matches where late information advantages create asymmetric risk profiles. Scottish League Cup ties typically see 40-60% of total volume in the final 90 minutes before kickoff, predominantly from informed money following team sheet releases.

The irony is this pushes more volume toward traditional bookmakers who maintain standard suspension timing, essentially defeating the supposed consumer protection rationale.

Had this bite me hard on Wednesday night with the St Mirren vs Morton clash. I'd been watching the team news all afternoon because Morton's top scorer was doubtful with a hamstring knock. The physio tweets came through at 5:15pm confirming he was out, which should have sent the under 2.5 goals from 1.92 down to about 1.75.

Rushed to get on Betfair and found everything locked solid. Ended up having to take 1.83 at Paddy Power instead of what should've been easy money at better odds. The match finished 1-0 to St Mirren so the bet won, but I left at least £40 profit on the table because of this ridiculous early suspension.

Been using seven.casino for their football markets lately and they keep everything live until 10 minutes before kickoff. Their Scottish cup coverage is actually more comprehensive than Betfair's these days, which says something about how far the exchange has fallen.

Been saying for months that Betfair's Scottish coverage has gone to pot. This is just another nail in the coffin. Three hours is taking the piss - you might as well place your bets at lunchtime and hope for the best.

The real kicker is they're still charging the same commission rates while providing a worse service. Time to vote with your feet and find exchanges that actually want your business.

From a market efficiency perspective, this creates significant arbitrage opportunities between Betfair's early-locked prices and bookmakers maintaining normal suspension windows. The 3-hour gap allows for substantial information asymmetry, particularly around team selections and weather conditions.

I've calculated that Scottish League Cup matches see an average 12% price movement in the final 2 hours before kickoff, primarily driven by team news and late money. By suspending at 3 hours, Betfair is essentially gifting this edge to traditional bookmakers who can adjust their lines accordingly.

The mathematical absurdity is that this "protection" measure actually increases market inefficiency rather than reducing it.

While the timing change is frustrating for serious punters, there might be valid reasons behind it. Scottish lower-league cup ties have historically been vulnerable to late information leaks and potential integrity issues around team selections.

The 3-hour window could be Betfair's response to regulatory concerns about suspicious betting patterns in these fixtures. Better to have restricted but clean markets than the wild west approach that's caused problems elsewhere.
