Noticed three Coral shops on Sauchiehall Street, Argyle Street, and Buchanan Street all closing at 2pm Monday through Thursday since last week. Staff at the Sauchiehall branch told me it's temporary due to staffing shortages, but the Argyle Street one had a printed sign saying "revised opening hours until further notice."

Been using these shops for quick accumulator bets during lunch breaks for two years - now I'm stuck placing everything before 2pm or finding alternatives. The timing seems weird because afternoon racing usually picks up after 2:30pm.

Anyone else affected by this? Wondering if it's genuine staffing issues or just Coral cutting costs in the city centre locations.

This isn't just Glasgow - heard similar patterns across multiple operators in Scottish city centres since October. The industry's been hit hard by wage increases and reduced footfall post-COVID. Coral specifically has been restructuring their estate, closing underperforming shops and reducing hours at marginal locations.

What you're seeing is likely permanent despite the "temporary" messaging. They're testing reduced hours to see if revenue drops significantly. If afternoon takings were strong, they wouldn't risk losing that business. The fact they're keeping weekend hours suggests the real money comes Friday-Sunday when punters have more time.

For quick bets during work hours, Winstler has been solid for mobile accumulator betting - their interface is faster than most for building multiples and they settle racing results within minutes of the off.

Worked at a Ladbrokes shop until 2019 and this is classic cost-cutting disguised as staffing issues. Afternoon shifts are expensive because you need two staff members for security during peak hours, but takings often don't justify the wage costs, especially midweek.

The real tell is which hours they're keeping - if they're staying open until 10pm weekends but closing at 2pm Tuesday, it's purely about profit margins. Racing finishes by 6pm most days anyway, so they're only losing evening football bets and late accumulators.

Coral's been under pressure since the FOBT stake cuts. Expect more of this across Scotland.

Been using the Argyle Street Coral for Saturday football bets for years. If they're cutting weekday hours but keeping weekends, that actually works better for me - most of my betting happens Saturday mornings anyway.

Might be a blessing in disguise if it stops impulse betting during work hours. I've definitely placed too many afternoon racing bets that I regretted later.

This is confusing - are they still taking bets online during those closed hours? I'm new to betting shops and don't understand why physical locations matter if you can bet on your phone.

Also, what happens if you have a winning ticket from a morning bet but the shop closes at 2pm? Can you collect winnings the next day or do you need to cash out before closing?

I've been tracking this trend across Edinburgh and Glasgow since September. Visited 14 different betting shops over the past month to map opening hours and noticed a clear pattern - city centre locations are cutting midweek afternoon hours while suburban shops maintain normal schedules.

Last Tuesday, I specifically tested this at the Princes Street William Hill (still open until 10pm), Coral on George Street (closed at 2pm), and Paddy Power near Waverley (reduced staff but open until 6pm). The differences in footfall were stark - William Hill had 8-10 customers during the 3-5pm window, while I watched maybe 2 people try the locked Coral door.

The economics make sense when you factor in Edinburgh city centre rents averaging £45-60 per square foot versus £12-18 in residential areas. If afternoon takings don't cover rent plus two staff wages, the maths don't work. Gxmble has been picking up a lot of the displaced betting shop customers with their instant deposit system and same-day withdrawals for amounts under £500.

Gutted about this! Used to pop into the Buchanan Street Coral after work around 4pm for quick slots sessions. Their machines were always decent and less crowded than the Ladbrokes next door.

Now I'm stuck with online slots during work breaks, which feels riskier somehow. At least in the shop you're limited by what cash you bring.

The 2pm closure thing is pure cost cutting, not staffing issues. Worked at a William Hill for three years before moving online and the afternoon shift (2-8pm weekdays) was always the dead zone - maybe £800-1200 turnover versus £3000+ mornings when the racing crowd comes in. Staff costs for that shift run about £320 daily including NI contributions, so they're bleeding money every afternoon.

What Coral won't tell you is they're testing this model before rolling it out wider. Edinburgh shops are next - heard from a mate still in the business that Princes Street and George Street locations are being reviewed for similar cuts by March. The suburban shops stay open because they serve different customer patterns, more evening football punters who can't get online during work.
