Noticed something dodgy yesterday playing Evolution's live blackjack at the £10 tables. Perfect Pairs side bet used to pay 9:1 for mixed pairs, but they've quietly dropped it to 8:1. Checked three different operators and it's the same across all of them.

The £5 tables still show 9:1 payouts, so they're clearly targeting higher stakes players. Mixed pairs went from 9:1 to 8:1, coloured pairs dropped from 12:1 to 10:1. Perfect pairs (same suit) still at 25:1 but give it time.

Confirmed at these stake levels:

  • £1-£5 tables: Still 9:1/12:1/25:1 (old payouts)
  • £10+ tables: Now 8:1/10:1/25:1 (reduced payouts)
  • VIP tables £25+: Same reduced structure

Anyone else caught this change? The house edge was already brutal on these side bets, now it's even worse for anyone playing decent stakes.

The mathematics here are grim. Perfect Pairs side bet already carried a house edge around 4.1% with the old 9:1/12:1/25:1 structure. Dropping mixed pairs to 8:1 pushes that edge up to roughly 5.8% - an increase of 1.7 percentage points.

For context, that's worse than most slot machines. The probability of hitting a mixed pair is approximately 7.69% (24 cards out of 312 remaining after your initial card). At 8:1 payouts, you're getting £80 back on a £10 bet when the true odds should pay closer to £118.

Evolution's clearly segmenting their payout structures by stake level, which is becoming standard practice across live dealer networks. They know recreational players at £10+ tables are less likely to calculate house edges than the £1 grinders. I've tracked similar reductions on MyStake and other operators using Evolution's network - it's a provider-level change, not operator-specific.

The £5 threshold is deliberate. Keeps the advertised RTPs intact for marketing purposes while extracting more from players who can afford higher stakes. Expect the £5 tables to follow suit within six months.

Played three hours of Evolution blackjack on Saturday night and hit two mixed pairs at the £10 table. Both paid 8:1 and I thought I was misremembering the old payouts. Makes sense now.

Still had a decent session overall - up £340 on the main game - but those side bets are properly stacked against you now. Might stick to the £5 tables if the payouts are still better there.

From the dealer side, we got notification about this payout change three weeks ago. Evolution updated their software to automatically adjust side bet payouts based on table limits. The system recognises stake thresholds and applies different payout structures accordingly.

What most punters don't realise is that the shuffle algorithms haven't changed - just the payouts. So you're hitting Perfect Pairs at the same frequency but getting paid less when you do. The dealers see the frustration when regulars notice their usual £90 payout (9:1 on £10) suddenly becomes £80.

Management's instruction was to direct any complaints to customer service rather than explain the change. Most operators using Evolution's platform have implemented this quietly. I've worked tables where players didn't notice for weeks because they weren't tracking their side bet returns closely.

This is exactly why I avoid side bets entirely. The house edge was already terrible at the old payouts, and now it's even worse. Better to focus on basic strategy for the main game where you can get the edge down to around 0.5%.

If you're determined to play side bets, at least stick to the £5 tables where the payouts haven't been butchered yet.

Word from contacts is that Evolution's rolling this out across all UK-facing operators over the next two months. The £5 threshold is temporary - expect that to drop to £2 by Christmas, then eventually all stakes will use the reduced payouts.

Some operators are negotiating different thresholds with Evolution, but the trend is clear. Tenobet actually pushed back on this initially but caved after Evolution threatened to increase their licensing fees. The live dealer market is basically a duopoly between Evolution and Pragmatic Live, so operators have limited leverage.

If you're serious about side bets, might be worth shopping around. Heard some of the smaller providers haven't implemented these changes yet, though their table limits and game variety are obviously more limited.

Another stealth nerf from the gambling industry. They'll keep the old payouts advertised on their main pages while quietly implementing worse odds at the tables. Classic bait and switch.

Check your game histories if you've been playing Perfect Pairs. Bet most people won't even notice they're getting shafted.
