Right, just signed up here after lurking for a few weeks. Got a proper question about something that's got me scratching my head.

Deposited £50 at a new site yesterday expecting the welcome bonus to come with 35x wagering as advertised on their promotions page. When I check my bonus balance this morning, it's showing 40x wagering requirements instead. The terms and conditions page still says 35x when I click through from the promo banner.

Is this normal? Should I contact support or just crack on with the 40x? It's an extra £175 worth of wagering I wasn't expecting, which changes whether it's worth pursuing or not. The bonus itself came through fine - £50 match plus 50 spins on Starburst.

Anyone else had bonus terms change between signup and activation? Want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious before I start complaining.

Welcome to the forum! This happens more than you'd think, unfortunately. I'd screenshot both the promo page showing 35x and your account showing 40x, then contact their live chat immediately. Most operators will honour the advertised terms if you've got proof.

Had similar with a weekend reload where they advertised 25x but applied 30x. Took about 20 minutes of back-and-forth but they adjusted it manually. Don't just accept the higher wagering - that's an extra fiver's worth of requirements you shouldn't have to meet.

Hold on - are you absolutely certain it said 35x? Because I've seen plenty of punters misread bonus terms, especially when there's different wagering for the deposit match versus the free spins.

Check if the 35x applies only to the spins winnings and the 40x is for the match bonus. Operators love splitting terms like that to confuse people. If it genuinely said 35x for everything, then aye, complain. But double-check you're not the one who got it wrong first.

I've been through this exact scenario three times in the past year, and it's always worth pushing back. The most recent was in September when I signed up during a weekend promo that clearly stated 30x wagering on the main banner. Come Monday morning, my account showed 35x requirements.

Contacted support through live chat and the first agent tried to fob me off saying the terms had 'updated automatically' - complete nonsense. Asked for a supervisor and within ten minutes they'd manually adjusted my bonus to the correct 30x terms. The key is having screenshots or at least knowing the exact time you registered so they can check their system logs.

What really wound me up was discovering they'd done this to other players the same weekend. Ended up switching to MyStake for their welcome package instead - their terms are rock solid and I've never had wagering requirements change post-signup. Worth considering if this site gives you more hassle.

Don't let them tell you it's a 'system error' either. If they advertised 35x, that's what you should get, end of story.

This is exactly why I always screenshot bonus terms before depositing. Had it happen twice last month alone - once where 25x became 30x overnight, and another where the max bet dropped from £5 to £3 per spin after activation.

The Starburst spins are usually separate wagering anyway. Check if those 50 spins have their own 35x requirement while your deposit match is 40x. That would actually make sense from their perspective, even if it's confusing as hell for players.

Track every spin too - I use a spreadsheet for bonus clearing and you'd be amazed how often the wagering meter doesn't update properly.

The mathematics here are straightforward - if you're playing optimal slots at 96% RTP, 35x wagering on a £50 bonus gives you roughly 67% chance of completing it profitably. At 40x wagering, that drops to about 59% chance.

That 5x difference represents £250 additional wagering requirement, which at average £2 spins means 125 extra spins with 4% house edge working against you. You're looking at approximately £10 extra expected loss.

Definitely worth the hassle of contacting support for a £10 swing in expected value, especially on principle.

Sorry for jumping in with another question, but how do you even know which sites have reliable bonus terms? I'm looking to make my first deposit somewhere and don't want to run into this same problem.

Should I be avoiding certain operators, or is this just something that happens everywhere? The whole thing sounds like a right headache to deal with when you're just trying to play some slots.

@inverness88 - stick with the established operators if you want consistent terms. I've had excellent experiences with Rolletto for welcome bonuses - their 35x wagering is clearly stated and never changes post-signup. Their live chat is also responsive if you do have questions.

@paisleypunter - definitely push back on this. I keep a folder of screenshots for exactly these situations. The fact their promo page still shows 35x is your smoking gun. Most operators will cave immediately when you point out the discrepancy because they know they're in the wrong.

@dundeerisk your maths are spot on but you're missing the bigger picture here. That 5x wagering difference isn't just about completion odds - it's about operators pulling a bait-and-switch after you've already deposited. I've seen this exact trick at three different sites in the past month.

The real issue is they're banking on punters not reading the updated terms once they're logged in. Most folk see the 35x on the landing page, deposit their £50, then find out it's actually 40x buried in the account dashboard. Pure predatory behaviour and it's getting worse across the board.
