The Prince and Princess of Wales made a notable appearance at the 2026 BAFTAs on Sunday evening, marking their first public engagement since a recent arrest involving Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. The royal couple garnered significant attention at the Royal Festival Hall event.
Prince William maintained his composure throughout the evening, even when confronted by a heckler who questioned if “the monarchy was in peril”. Both the Prince and Princess showed a united front as they navigated the red carpet.
The Princess of Wales wore a bespoke Gucci chiffon gown in lilac tones, complemented by a burgundy velvet sash. Prince William sported a matching burgundy dinner jacket, with his hair and beard visibly trimmed for the occasion.
Observations of their interaction on the red carpet were made public. Lip reader Jeremy Freeman reported that Kate told her husband, “look at the people!” before gesturing and greeting, ‘Hey!’. Prince William then advised his wife to “watch your step” as they moved indoors.
Body language expert Judi James noted the couple’s “A-list best” appearance, suggesting “dazzling glamour and elegance”. She also highlighted that their “subtly matching outfits radiate messages of being one bonded unit and a royal power couple,” adding that Kate appeared “keen to signal regal confidence and unflappable stoicism.”
Despite their composed public display, James also identified “subtle signs of suppressed or masked tension”. She observed “some slight edge-to-edge clenching of the teeth,” which she suggested hinted at “an air of resolve rather than a completely relaxed approach to the event.”
Prince William alluded to private family challenges during the evening. He confessed he is not “calm” at present, explaining why he had not watched the film “Hamnet”. He mentioned that Kate had found the deeply moving film compelling after viewing it on Saturday evening.
The royal pair have reportedly distanced themselves from Andrew amid the recent developments. Their attendance at the BAFTAs also saw other notable figures present, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothy Chalamet, Jessie Buckley, and Emma Stone.
